History
History: | On the front of the plinth is a framed information sheet about Pegler’s career:
Unveiled Saturday 15 May 1999 by the Mayor of Crawley Borough Council and members of Alf Pegler’s family. Pegler was first elected to the council in 1956 and became its Chairman in 1959. He served as Leader of the Council for eighteen years and was Mayor from 1982 – 1984. It was for his services to housing that he was given an OBE. He was also a member of the West Sussex County Council from 1958 and was made a Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex in 1982. At various times he also served on the Sussex Police Authority, the Mid Downs Health Authority and Crawley Horsham Health Trust. He was made a Freeman of the Borough in May 1995. Pegler was widely known as ‘Mr. Crawley’.(Edited) |
