Description:A lifesize statue of the composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein. The statue, dressed in tails, waistcoat and bow-tie, depicts him in the act of conducting an orchestra. Both hands and arms are raised. In the right hand he holds a conductor’s baton. A piece of music is suspended at waist level as if falling to the floor. Faces west in the courtyard.
Iconographical description:The title is taken from Bernstein’s response to an interview question. When asked what were the principles by which he judged a piece of music, he replied; ‘One criterion…does it exalt me?’
